Baselworld 2014 is just around the corner, where thousands of journalists from all over the world head over to the Swiss city of Basel for almost 10 days of pure horological madness, where most of the major watch brands that weren’t officially at SIHH showcase their latest creations.
Luckily for The Horophile however, almost every major watch brand is just a train ride away, so I’ve been able to get some hands-on content from some of the brands before the fair actually starts. One of those brands is Arnold & Son, who in the past month or so have announced several of their new watches before Baselworld, which I’ve been covering in “The Sunday Horophile Times” weekly posts.
The latest piece announced just 3 days ago is the CTB, which stands for “Chronograph True Beat”. What you have here is a coumn-wheel chronograph that functions like any chronograph, with a central smooth-sweeping seconds hand and a minutes register at 6 o’clock. The added twist (which hold two patents by the way) is the addition of a central True Beat or “dead”constant seconds hand. If you time the start of the chronograph when the constant seconds is “00” seconds, you get the impression that the smooth-sweeping chronograph is trying to catch-up to the True Beat seconds hand.
Here’s a not-so-great video of the piece I made trying to capture that “cat and mouse” effect.
More on the Arnold & Son CTB after Baselworld.
