Today I thought I’d share a quick look at one of Rolex’s less talked about new releases from Baselworld 2014, the Milgauss Blue ref. 116400GV.
In 2007, Rolex brought back their then-discontinued paramagnetic Milgauss line with an “anniversary” version, the 116400 GV. It was one of Rolex’s bolder releases in recent years, more of an aesthetic. The bright orange accents, the lighting bolt seconds inspired by the original Milgauss 6541 from 1958 hand and the green sapphire crystal, the Milgauss 116400 GV was a love or hate affair in the collective watch community. Personally, I always loved a watch.
This year at Baselworld, Rolex showcased a new version of the Milgauss 116400GV with a blue dial. Here, Rolex have gone with a new electric blue dial they’ve dubbed “Z blue”. Done in Radial “sunburst” brushed metal, the blue’s tone is somewhere between Rolex’s “glacier blue” on Platinum pieces and the deeper blue found on certain Datejust variations.
The orange text, markers and seconds hand work really well with the blue dial, making them blend in better than on its black dial equivalent, where I found the green glass added too much of a tint to the black.
Unlike the original 116400GV however, the Z blue doesn’t have orange luminous paint in the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock applied baton hour markers, which I think was a wise choice considering all the different colors already going on between the dial and crystal.
I have to say, I do find this color the most pleasing from all the current Milgauss versions available. The blue works really well with the green crystal, I can totally see this becoming a go-to summer watch. I just love how the dial can shift from a metallic petroleum blue to bright turquoise!
The Rolex Milgauss Blue 116400 GV will be priced at $8’200 USD and we should start seeing it at official retailers soon.
So, what do you think of this new version of the Milgauss? We’d love to hear your thoughts below.

Ordered one. Word is not too many will be shipping. As of 6/5/14 supposedly only 11 in the US, all at Rolex company locations and a few dealers. That is per the guys at the Rolex boutique in NYC. My dealer in Jacksonville says wait till September or October for mine. May be wishful thinking.

Hi Markekortum, I wouldn’t be surprised, even here in Switzerland most dealers haven’t received a single piece. Septemebr’s not too bad.

Had one on order as soon as I saw the pics, loved it to bits. However after seeing one in the flesh at a Rolex presentation evening I was left feeling underwhelmed. The dial looked rather bland in natural light so I decided to opt for another model.

Hi Stephen,
I believe the problem is with the green sapphire crystal, which definitely takes away from the blue dial’s “electric” tone. If I do end up getting one, I’ll probably swap the crystal for a standard one.

To try different resting positions ie 2-3 days winder up or the same winder
Down,good luck.

Ive just ordered one too………………got to wait now several months. i’ve seen it in the flesh and think the colours are stunning. How anyone could want to spoil it by putting on clear glass is beyond me – the green tinge really adds depth in my opinion. Anyway – each to their own!

I went to my dealer in Sept.2014 and saw one, usually my dealer could give me a bit of discount since I bought quite some watches from them. However, the Manager said it was a new watch and no discount. So instead I bought another Rolex. Fast forward April 2015, I called again and the dealer had one and the manager was willing to give me a good price, so I had it for a few days. I must say, I like the combination of the green crystal and blue dial a lot.
